PORTARIA village

Portaria’, is the most popular village in Pelion due to its location near to volos but also within reach of the wider area of the Pelion Peninsula with lots of things to see and do.

Its beautiful central square is shaded by gigantic Plane Trees which are hundreds of years old and there are many local shops, restaurants, Café’s & other amenities in easy walk. It is also just 2km from its beautiful sister village ‘Makrinitsa‘, which is a perfect afternoons walk to explore this village and cuisine.

Portaria is famous for its traditional stone mansion houses or ‘Archontico’s’, constructed by wealthy merchants who returned from North Africa & Asia minor after the Greek war of independence to stimulate a Renaissance Architecture that now forms a beautiful part of Greek History.

Villages & Beaches of Pelion

Touring the stone villages & visiting its beaches is one of the most popular thing to do in Pelion.

For Touring, the peninsula can be divided firstly, into Volos & the seaside route along the inner gulf. Here you will find many nice long sandy beaches & fishing villages like Kala Nera and Afissos. Rising up from there several routes head towards the central mountainous & forest areas. With great views, the road meets chains of villages such as the famous ‘Vizitsa‘ with its characteristic mansions, and ‘Milies‘, surrounded by mature forest.

Continuing North and finally with some winding roads down to the Aegean are perhaps some of the most beautiful of Pelion’s hamlets such as Tsagaratha and Damouchari along with the blue flag beaches & beauty spots of Milopotamos, Horefto, and Ig.Ioannis. Or for a trip to the end of the world, just head towards the tip for around an hour of sea views to find Platanias & the last cafes & tavernas & perfect beach spot.

The Little Train of Pelion

If you are wondering what to see and do in Pelion during your visit this should be high on your list!

The ‘Little Train’ of Pelion operates from Spring to Autumn making a 1.5 hour round trip from the seaside fishing village of  the Ano Gatzea to the Beautiful village of Milies.

Thr route ascends through some of Pelions most picturesque natural landscapes and with architectural beauties like the stoned – five arcade bridge, named Kalorema, in the Malakio area and metal bridge of Taxiarchis or de Chirico.

From the pretty station at Milies there is a path to the village center where you can discover Traditional guesthouses, taverns, Taxiarches church, which was built in 1741, the folklore museum and the library which is one of the oldest in Greece.

Hiking Biking Canyoning & Kayak

Before roads, Pelion’s villages were once connected by a network of donkey tracks which acted as communication routes between the local villages. In recent years these have been uncovered again & cleared to make fantastic Hiking paths. Walking & Hiking in the region is now one of the most popular things to do in the region.

Gastronomy in Pelion

Pelion has a variety of locally produced foods & specialities. Many of the villages have collective groups producing a preserved sweet fruit called ‘γλυκό του κουταλιού‘ with varieties from carrot to watermelon.You will discover many types of Honeys, Cheeses, Herbs & locally harvested Mountain Teas. We searve many each day at our Breakfast!

The local organic farm of the Koumoutsi family on the main road from Portaria village to Hania shows off nicely much of the best of the local foods, and for families with small children especially, or for a real Farm-To-Fork experience, the Karaiskos Farm is a must-do!

Places to Visit in Pelion

Day Trips in Thessaly

The area of Volos City along the seafront is pretty for a short shopping trip but if you are looking for something a little further in the area to see & do, then the Ancient sites of Thermopylae is a great halfway stop from Athens, and the Ancient City of Dion, a wonderful trip for History Buffs in the region.

Probably most dramatic are the  Monasteries of Meteora at just over an hours reach from Volos. Built on a natural formation of sandstone rock pillars up to 400 meters high the 6 remaining monasteries of Meteora date from the 14th century and form a remarkable & awe inspiring combination of nature and spiritual significance and a top pick when considering what to do during your stay in Pelion.
